A Practical Guide to Cloud Migration

Moving to the cloud doesn't have to be daunting. Learn the phases, common pitfalls, and how to ensure a smooth transition.

Why migrate?

Cloud migration offers scalability, cost efficiency, and access to modern services. But the "why" should drive the "how." Are you reducing infrastructure cost? Improving resilience? Enabling new capabilities? Your goals shape the migration strategy.

Lift-and-shift vs. refactor

Lift-and-shift gets workloads to the cloud quickly but may not optimize cost or performance. Refactoring for cloud-native architectures takes longer but often yields better long-term results. Many organizations use a hybrid: quick wins with lift-and-shift, strategic refactors for critical workloads.

Security and compliance first

Don't treat security as an afterthought. Understand shared responsibility models, implement identity and access controls from day one, and ensure compliance requirements (GDPR, HIPAA, etc.) are met before go-live.

Plan for the cutover

Minimize downtime with clear cutover plans, rollback procedures, and communication. Test migrations in non-production environments. Have a go/no-go checklist and decision owners.
